PETITION: URGENT ACTION ON ROAD SAFETY IN MADELEY HEATH

I am calling on Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to take immediate and meaningful action to improve road safety on Newcastle Road and Crewe Road in Madeley Heath, particularly outside The Meadows Primary School.

Many local people have contacted me following a very worrying incident last week in which a local parent was knocked down while dropping his daughter off at the start of the school day. While I am relieved that his daughter was brought to safety and that the parent is now in a stable condition, this incident should never have happened. No parent should be put in harm’s way while simply taking their child to school.

Residents have repeatedly raised serious concerns about speeding, dangerous driving and the lack of effective traffic-calming measures in this area. These concerns have been clear for some time and must now be addressed as a matter of urgency.

The Government has recently announced a new Fair Funding settlement for local government. With a £159.3 million increase in funding for Staffordshire County Council – a 21% uplift in core spending power over the course of this Parliament – local authorities have the resources to act. Residents in Madeley Heath rightly expect road safety to be treated as a priority, not delayed any further.

I therefore petition Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to:

  • Carry out a full and urgent review of road safety on Newcastle Road and Crewe Road

  • Properly consider traffic lights, speed bumps, speed cameras and other traffic-calming measures

  • Take immediate action to tackle speeding and dangerous driving

  • Put in place measures that protect children, parents, pedestrians and all road users

This petition will be presented to Parliament in January 2026 to demonstrate the strength of local feeling and the urgent need for action.

I am determined, as the Member of Parliament for Newcastle-under-Lyme, to continue pressing for the changes needed to make our roads safer in Madeley Heath and across the constituency.
