Closure Notice Issued to Walleys Quarry Ltd

28 November 2024

My statement on the Environment Agency's decision to issue a closure notice to the operator of Walleys Quarry Landfill

Today, the Environment Agency has made the significant decision to serve a closure notice on the operator of Walleys Quarry. This is a major step forward for our community and a moment that so many have worked tirelessly to achieve.

For years, Walleys Quarry has caused unacceptable harm to Newcastle-under-Lyme. This closure notice acknowledges the devastating impact the site has had on residents who have endured far too much for far too long.

When I was elected as your MP, I promised to tackle this issue head-on. In fact, my very first question in the House of Commons was about Walleys Quarry. Since then, I have worked to bring this crisis to national attention—meeting with the Chief Executive of the Environment Agency, hosting visits from both the Environment Secretary and the Public Health Minister, and bringing campaigners, ministers, and local agencies together for vital discussions. I also led a Parliamentary debate on ‘Waste Crime in Staffordshire’ and gave evidence to the Borough Council’s inquiry into the site.

But let me be clear: this closure notice is not a victory for any one person. It is the result of the tireless work of countless campaigners, residents, and community leaders. To everyone who played a part in this—thank you. Your steadfast resolve has been instrumental in achieving this significant step forward.

Crucially, while this is a significant step forward, the immediate focus must now shift to ensuring the site is safely restored and managed. I will work closely with the Environment Agency, local authorities, and other key stakeholders to make sure the site is properly capped, maintained, and restored. This is essential for protecting the health and wellbeing of our community in the years ahead. I am fully committed to seeing this process through, ensuring it is handled swiftly and effectively, and holding all parties accountable for delivering these critical outcomes.

At the same time, I will continue to push for changes to the law and regulatory frameworks to ensure no community has to endure a situation like this again—here in Newcastle-under-Lyme or anywhere else in the United Kingdom.

This closure notice demonstrates what we can achieve when we come together. Let’s continue working to secure a brighter, safer, future for Newcastle-under-Lyme.
