We, the undersigned, call on Staffordshire County Council to urgently develop and implement a tailored road safety plan for every school in Staffordshire, designed to ensure the safety of children, parents, carers and school staff when travelling to and from school.
This petition follows multiple serious incidents outside Meadows Primary School in Madeley, where the current road layout, crossing arrangements and traffic management have proved insufficient to ensure the safety of those travelling to and from the school during drop-off and pick-up times. These incidents have caused significant concern locally and make it clear that the measures currently in place outside many schools are not adequate.
Schools differ in their locations, road layouts, traffic levels and surrounding infrastructure. A one-size-fits-all approach does not work. Each school requires a plan tailored to its specific risks, including appropriate crossing points, traffic-calming measures, signage and enforcement.
Children should be able to travel to and from school safely without parents and carers fearing for their wellbeing. The repeated incidents outside Madeley School highlight the consequences of failing to act and underline the urgent need for a proactive and preventative approach across Staffordshire.
We therefore call on Staffordshire County Council to commit to delivering an individual road safety plan for every school, starting with an urgent assessment of Meadows Primary School, and to work with schools, parents and local communities to implement improvements to help prevent further incidents and ensure that every child in Staffordshire can travel to school safely.
