Today, I received confirmation from Transport Minister, Simon Lightwood MP, that safety improvements are being progressed at the A500 Audley Slip Road – a direct result of the pressure we’ve been applying locally and in Parliament.
The Minister was responding to the letter I sent to the Secretary of State for Transport earlier this month, in which I urged the Government to step in and ensure action was finally taken to make this junction safe.
In his reply, the Transport Minister confirms that National Highways has visited the site, worked with the police to review recent incidents, and is now taking steps to improve safety. Upgraded signage will be installed to reinforce the need for drivers to give way at the top of the slip road, and temporary signs will be added in the meantime to improve driver awareness.
This is a positive step forward – and one that wouldn’t have happened without local residents coming together to demand change.
Since this issue was first raised with me, I’ve written to Staffordshire County Council, National Highways, and the Secretary of State for Transport, and I’ve presented a petition to Parliament signed by more than 260 residents. Together, we’ve made sure that this issue could no longer be ignored.
While this progress is welcome, there’s still more to do to make this junction truly safe. I’ll continue working with National Highways and Staffordshire County Council to ensure this is just the start of a wider plan to improve safety for local people.
