I was delighted to welcome Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones MP to Newcastle-under-Lyme last week to discuss antisocial behaviour and the issues affecting our town centre, and communities across the constituency.

I brought together local businesses and traders, the Town ward councillors and Staffordshire Police to share their concerns directly with the Minister at a roundtable. We then did a walkabout with the Minister to show her the local antisocial behaviour hotspots, including the ‘sunken roundabout’, and many of the other areas shared with me through my Local Crime Survey.

I was proud to vote for the Crime and Policing Act 2026 in April, which established the framework for new Respect Orders to tackle persistent offenders and strengthen protections for our communities. These orders come into force today, giving courts new powers restricting where persistent offenders can go and what they can do, or requiring them to address the causes of their behaviour.

Breaching a Respect Order will be a criminal offence, with a potential prison sentence of up to two years.

It’s good to see action being taken to tackle antisocial behaviour, and Respect Orders are a step in the right direction. But zero tolerance must mean zero tolerance, and we need to see these powers make a real difference on the ground.

It is so important to local residents and businesses that we get this right so our high streets can thrive.

I launched my Local Crime Survey last month to find out what you think about antisocial behaviour in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Tell me where you think the hotspots are, which areas you feel unsafe in, and what you think needs to change.

If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to complete the survey and share your views.

Your feedback will help me raise your concerns and push for action where it’s needed most.
