Raising the Issue of Spiking in Parliament

In House of Commons Business Questions (30 October 2025)

In recent days and weeks, there have been disturbing reports of people being spiked by injection in Newcastle town centre. I’ve heard from residents who are fearful and angry — and I share their concern.

No one should feel unsafe on a night out. Our town centre must be safe, welcoming and secure for everyone.

Yesterday I raised this issue directly in Parliament during Business Questions to the Leader of the House, calling for urgent action to tackle these crimes and protect our community.

Alongside this, I’ve written to the Home Secretary to ask what the Government is doing to assess the rise in needle-spiking reports, collect national data, and ensure the right support for police, local authorities and hospitality venues. You can read the full letter here.

Locally, I have met with – and written to – the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Staffordshire to press for an increased police and PCSO presence in Newcastle town centre, and to find out what steps are being taken to raise awareness among businesses and residents about this threat.

I will continue working with local partners, the police and government to ensure our town centre remains safe and welcoming for all.
