I am aware of rumours circulating about the future use of Gordon Court in Knutton – and of a protest now being planned in response to those claims.
These rumours are unfounded. There are no plans for Gordon Court to be used to house asylum seekers or to operate as a so–called ‘migrant hotel’.
I have discussed the issue with the Home Office, raised it with Newcastle-under-Lyme District Borough Council and have spoken directly to the new owner of the site following its sale by Aspire Housing. The new owner has categorically stated that there are no plans to house migrants at Gordon Court – and I will be meeting with them to discuss this matter, and their plans, in further detail.
This kind of misinformation has real consequences. It can create fear, sow division, and lead to unnecessary anxiety. People rightly care about what happens in our local area but it is vital that our discussions are based on facts.
I will keep pushing to make sure residents are properly informed, that their concerns are taken seriously, and that decisions are made openly and transparently.
Here in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Staffordshire more generally, we have a proud history of being good neighbours and being the best of British – decent, compassionate and caring.
Whatever the challenges facing us at home and overseas, let’s keep working together to live those values and build a better community.
If you have questions or concerns, please get in touch with my office at adam.jogee.mp@parliament.uk.
I will continue to follow this matter closely and keep residents informed.
