Celebrating England: Leading the St George's Day and English Affairs Debate in Parliament

Updated: May 9

To mark the recent St George’s Day celebrations, I was honoured to lead the St George’s Day and English Affairs debate in Parliament — a chance to reflect on what it means to be English, to celebrate our history, and above all, to recognise the people who make our country what it is today.

As I said in my speech:

“England’s greatest asset is its people. Hard-working, God-fearing, decent folks who don’t walk by on the other side but turn up to be counted.”

From the NHS to our schools, from veterans’ centres to local farms, and in communities across the country, I see the best of England every day — including in Newcastle-under-Lyme, the northern corner of the ancient county of Staffordshire that I’m proud to represent.

It felt especially apt to lead this debate today, on VE Day — a day when we remember the sacrifice, bravery, and unity of those who came before us to defend our freedoms and help shape the future we enjoy today.

As we reflect on both St George’s Day and VE Day, let’s celebrate all that we share, honour the sacrifices of the past, and commit to building an England that is fairer, kinder, and full of opportunity for all.

Happy St George’s Day — and on this VE Day, we remember them.
