Taking School Safety Concerns in Madeley Heath to Parliament

Updated: Jan 23

Presentation of the Petition in Parliament (22 January 2026)

Today, I presented a petition to the House of Commons on behalf of residents of Newcastle-under-Lyme, calling for urgent action to improve road safety on the A525 and Crewe Road in Madeley Heath, outside Meadows Primary School.

The petition was brought forward following long-standing concerns raised by parents and residents, and after a deeply worrying incident in December in which a local parent was knocked down while dropping their child off at the start of the school day.

The petition presented to Parliament reads as follows:

“The petition of residents of the constituency of Newcastle-under-Lyme, “Declares that the A525 outside Meadows Primary School, and at the junction of Crewe Road, is inadequate, dangerous and putting the lives of the people of Newcastle-under-Lyme at risk; acknowledges that in recent weeks, a parent was knocked down dropping their child off to school, and there have been many more near misses in the weeks and months before us; notes that each and every parent should feel safe dropping their children off at school; and further notes that an online petition on this same issue has reached 298 signatures from people who live, learn and work in Newcastle-under-Lyme. “The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to push Staffordshire County Council to make the sections of the A525 near Meadows Primary School in Newcastle-under-Lyme fit for purpose by introducing traffic calming measures that would meaningfully improve safety such as traffic lights, speed bumps, speed cameras, a reduced speed zone, or roundabout modification.”

This parliamentary petition is directly linked to the public petition on my website, signed by 298 people who live, learn and work in Newcastle-under-Lyme, which set out residents’ concerns and called for immediate and meaningful action to improve road safety in Madeley Heath.

I will continue to engage with Staffordshire County Council and the Staffordshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to press for improvements and to ensure that the safety of children and families travelling to and from school remains a priority.
