Snow Across Newcastle-under-Lyme: Gritting and Winter Preparedness

Updated: Jan 6

Snowy scene on Hempstalls Lane

Ahead of the festive season, I wrote to Staffordshire County Council to ask what preparations were in place for winter weather and gritting across Newcastle-under-Lyme.

While none of us can control how much snow falls, we can plan properly and respond properly. That is why I raised these concerns in advance, rather than waiting until severe winter weather arrived.

On 18 December, I received a response from the Chief Executive of Staffordshire County Council outlining the Council’s approach to winter gritting.

You can read the full response from Staffordshire County Council below:

With the ground covered in snow today, I have seen the impact of the conditions on local roads myself. Like many residents, I am concerned about safety, accessibility, and whether plans are translating into effective action on the ground.

For that reason, I am writing again to Staffordshire County Council today to seek clear answers on three specific points: how many roads in Newcastle-under-Lyme have been gritted during the current weather; how many issues or concerns have been raised with the County Council since conditions worsened; and how residents can access grit locally within our communities.

When people are struggling to travel safely, reach work, school, or medical appointments, those experiences must be taken seriously and followed up.

I will continue to raise concerns with the County Council where problems are identified and press for responses that reflect the realities people are facing during this period of severe winter weather.

If you are experiencing issues with untreated roads or pavements, please let me know so these can be raised and followed up.

You can do this by emailing me at adam.jogee.mp@parliament.uk with the subject line: 'Gritting and Winter Weather'

Please take care and stay safe in these conditions.
