Statement: Winter Fuel Payments

A targeted approach to the Winter Fuel Payment is right – but it must also be fair to those in need and to tax payers.
That’s why I welcome the Chancellor’s decision to reinstate Winter Fuel Payments for pensioners with incomes under £35,000. This change will mean over three-quarters of pensioners in England and Wales will receive the payment this winter – and it will make a real difference to many in Newcastle-under-Lyme and across the country.
Since the original decision to restrict eligibility, I have made representations to my colleagues in government calling for a more balanced approach that offers support to all those who genuinely need it. I’ve consistently made the case that the income threshold was set too low to reflect the reality of financial pressures facing many pensioners on modest, fixed incomes. It was a message I heard loud and clear from residents across Newcastle-under-Lyme.
At the same time, I’ve always been clear: it is not right for millionaires to receive taxpayer-funded benefits like the Winter Fuel Payment. We must ensure public money - our money - is used responsibly, with support targeted fairly to those who need it most.
This is a welcome step. I am pleased the government has listened, and I will continue to engage closely with colleagues to ensure this support is delivered fairly and reaches the pensioners who need it most this winter and all winters.
