Just before the festive break, I was pleased to visit Specsavers on Castle Walk to congratulate the team on winning the Professional Services Award at the LoveNUL Business Awards.
The LoveNUL awards celebrate the people and businesses that power our local economy – and this recognition is a real testament to the professionalism, care and dedication shown by the Specsavers team here in Newcastle-under-Lyme every day.
During my visit, we talked about the vital role community opticians play in delivering NHS eye and hearing services locally. Accessible care on the high street makes a real difference to people’s lives, helping patients get the support they need more quickly and closer to home, while also easing pressure on GP surgeries and hospitals.
I was particularly interested to hear about the success of community-based NHS eye care services, which allow people with minor eye conditions to be treated safely and conveniently without needing to attend hospital. This kind of joined-up, preventative care is exactly the direction our health services need to move in – improving access for patients while making better use of NHS resources.
The visit was also a reminder of the importance of local employers like Specsavers to our town centre. Alongside delivering essential health services, they provide skilled jobs, training opportunities and long-term careers.
I want to thank the team for taking the time to show me around and to talk through both the opportunities and challenges facing local businesses. I will always support employers who are investing locally, creating jobs, and delivering high-quality services for residents.
Congratulations again to everyone at Specsavers on a well-deserved award.
