Today is World Sepsis Day. I recently attended a parliamentary drop-in session hosted by the UK Sepsis Trust to mark the occasion.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body’s response to an infection spirals out of control. It’s sometimes known as the ‘silent killer’ because its early symptoms can be easily missed – yet it claims around 48,000 lives every year in the UK.

The drop-in was a valuable opportunity to learn more about how we can raise awareness of sepsis and ensure people know the early warning signs so they can seek help quickly. I spoke with clinicians, campaigners, and families affected by sepsis about the urgent need for action and better understanding of this condition.

It was also great to see football legend Harry Redknapp at the event, alongside Lord Craig Mackinlay, whose own personal experience of surviving sepsis and quadruple amputation has shone a powerful spotlight on this devastating condition.

Raising awareness of sepsis is so important here in Newcastle-under-Lyme and across the country. Early intervention saves lives, and I’ll keep working to make sure that our community has access to the information and healthcare resources needed to fight this devastating condition.
