🎬 Watch: Raising the proposed closure of FedEx’s Parkhouse depot in Parliament

This week, FedEx announced its intention to close the depot at Parkhouse Industrial Park — a decision that puts around 400 jobs in Newcastle-under-Lyme at risk.

The site has operated for over 35 years and is home to a workforce made up largely of long-serving, highly experienced local people. FedEx says it plans to replace five UK depots, including Parkhouse, with two new ‘super hubs’ in Warwickshire and Buckinghamshire. But for workers here, that amounts to being told to relocate hundreds of miles — or lose their jobs.

The closure is not expected to take place until 2028 or 2029, but the uncertainty has already begun. Many staff are understandably asking whether they need to look for a new job now, whether they can still commit to a mortgage, or how they’ll continue to support their families. That kind of disruption doesn’t wait four years — it starts immediately.

In Parliament, I called on FedEx to think again and work with me and others to find alternatives. I also asked the Government to step in — and I was assured that I’ll be supported in securing a ministerial meeting to help press the case for our community.

Here’s the full statement I issued following the announcement:

“I am deeply shocked and saddened by today’s announcement that FedEx plans to close its site at Parkhouse Industrial Park, with the potential loss of 400 local jobs. The company says it is seeking to streamline operations by shutting five UK depots and replacing them with two new ‘super hubs’. My thoughts are with all the employees, their families, and the wider community who will be affected by this devastating news. This community deserves answers – and action. I will be meeting with FedEx leadership and holding urgent talks with local union representatives and government ministers to ensure that every possible form of support is made available to those impacted. Some meetings have already been scheduled following this morning’s surprise announcement. We must do everything we can to protect livelihoods and strengthen our local economy. I believe the site is strategically located and should be able to prosper – if the company is willing to work with local stakeholders to explore alternatives. If you have been affected, please get in touch with my office. We stand ready to support you and make representations on your behalf.”
